Diaphragm vs Piston Gauges

Piston Style

These gauges measure pressure drops using precision machined metal piston encapsulated in a PTFE seal. This creates similar seal to a hypodermic needle. Despite the accuracy to which these seals are machined, there is still a small amount of leakage that occurs around the piston. This is why a piston gauge should not be used for liquid level applications or leak detection systems. Instead, they are recommended for filtration systems and flow rate applications.

Diaphragm Style

This type of gauge utilizes a rubber diaphragm to measure pressure. This creates a perfect barrier through the gauge and allows for zero leakage. Because they create a perfect seal, they are best suited for liquid level applications and leak detection systems. As the diaphragm size increases, the sensing area also increases. This is why larger diaphragms are used on low pressure ranges, such as the 400DGC.

Application Examples
Filtration

By measuring a pressure drop across a filter, operators can get a visual indication about how dirty their filter systems are. Common accessories include color bands and electrical switches for alarms.

Measuring liquid levels for cryogenic storage vessels is one of the largest developing applications for differential pressure gauges. Common accessories include panel mount dials, dense mark dials, and vertical calibration

Flow Monitoring

Using the Bernoulli Principle, differential gauges can convert pressure drops to flow rates. We can customize gauges to your exact flow data. Common accessories include pipe mounting kits and dual scales

Leak Detection

A differential gauge is a great tool for detecting leaks in systems. A reference tank can be used to test leaks in storage vessels or you can use a gauge over a length of plumbing to detect a pressure drop.
